Sorry for the blog absence the last few days, I was taking some time off with my boyfriend in London (long distance relationships are hard!) and now I'm in Jerusalem with my parents for New Year's Eve! I'm off to London tomorrow, celebrating Christmas in my favourite city in the world with my favourite person in the world! I'll surely be wearing a variation on this outfit when I'm there, I got the coat covered (thrifted for 8euros, ka-ching!), same goes for the sweater (seriously, forget NY or London when it comes to vintage shopping, Amman is the place to be), dress and handbag (thank you Santa), now all I need is a pair of (*cough* affordable) overknee boots, which is definitely on my London shopping list. Who says you can't get yourself a Christmas present?

NSFA

After two days without electricity and after experiencing the worst snow storm in the Middle East in ages, I can say one thing: I will never take central heating for granted anymore. Obviously these pictures were taking a while ago, when the weather still allowed for ripped jeans and light knit tops. Oh those days! These jeans are what I call NSFA - Not Suitable For Amman. I've only worn them twice since I've been here: in Petra (where this could be considered modest dressing compared to the other tourists in tiny shorts and tank tops) and in my apartment, since walking around in Amman showing leg like this would not be a pleasant experience - for me at least, since the shabaab (Jordanian youth) would go even crazier than usual if they saw me in these jeans. Totally not bragging btw, this is just what women experience every day when walking down the Amman streets.
I'm glad to have moved to a more liberal-minded neighbourhood, where ripped jeans and 'fashionable' outfits are less frowned upon, but with the current weather situation, I don't see bare knees in the near future...

Hello winter

All of a sudden winter has arrived in Amman, which has urged me to finally get out the coats, scarfs and gloves. I'm glad to have found two excellent winter coats at the local vintage market, cause I didn't really bring any - who expects cold weather in the Middle East? I can only dream of the boots though, as Amman's pavements aren't really heel-friendly. I've almost reached the bottom of my favourite moisturizer jar from Rituals, as cold temperatures equal dry skin for life. And now if you'll excuse me, I'll go bundle up under my blanket...

Jerusalem

After having spent 3 days in Jerusalem I dare to say it has instantly become one of my favourite cities in the world. It's amazing to walk around this Holy City that holds so much history and where you can feel the religious vibe everywhere, not to mention the cultural melting pot that has really stolen my heart. I've convinced my parents to go back when they're coming to visit me around New Year's Eve - I can't wait! My favourite thing about Jerusalem has to be the food though: I've had one of the best meals I've had in years at a small but very hip bar/restaurant downtown, as well as amazing falafel and hummus (topped with pine nuts, need I say more?). Also, I've totally taken over the Jewish Shabbat ritual by not doing anything today, while I actually have to study for my final exam tomorrow. Inshallah, as Arabs would say!

Leopard

Can you believe I didn't have anything leopard in my closet? Enter Persunmall, who let me choose something from their website (and even have it delivered in Jordan, way to go!) I've been wearing this blouse and this outfit in particular all the time lately, it's just so easy to throw on when you overslept and have to get ready for class in 10 minutes (story of my life). These are also one of the last pictures I took on my rooftop, as I'm moving apartments tomorrow! So excited.

So blogging hasn't been my biggest priority lately.. Sorry for that. It seems that our teachers decided to kill us with homework, papers and presentations this week... Don't worry, I'm still alive, but it could be a bit more quiet around here for the next week too. 

As I told you before, shopping in Jordan hasn't been much to write home about. After browsing through the endless racks of clothes at the several malls in Amman I realised shopping for the sake of having something new, and buying something just because it was 'cheap' doesn't interest me anymore. I discussed this topic briefly on my facebook page last week, but cheap stores like Primark, Forever21 & co. are no longer on my to-do list, as most of their clothes are made in sweatshops in Asia (we all remember the Bangladesh clothing factory drama...) and I just don't think it's right. I've always been raised in an eco-conscious family and since we've been talking about sustainability and environment issues in class this week, I've started questioning my living and shopping habits. I try to live and eat healthy, buy organic and fairtrade products, save energy etc. and now it's time to adapt my shopping habits. I'd rather save up a bit more to get something with great quality than buy crappy pieces that have been produced by people for less than $1 a day. It's so easy to just give in and get that Primark sweater because its so damn cheap, but RESIST. I. WILL.

Also, thanks mom for chipping in and buying me that awesome Cos sweater!

What is your opinion on conscious fashion?

PS: I know some of the items in this collage aren't considered conscious shopping (or affordable for that matter - $1000 silk trousers, anyone?), but you can't go cold turkey from one day to another, right? ;)

The boots

Oh these boots... After searching every Zara store in Jordan (two, to be exact. I like drama), I finally found the Miu Miu lookalike boots I'd been wanting for months. I was kind of reluctant at first cause Zara shoes always give me the worst blisters, but these are so comfortable! I'm definitely happy that the weather has gotten chilly in Amman (although we just had a really warm & sunny weekend - make up your mind, weather!), so I'll probably wear these every single day. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Wadi Rum

I know, I'm really behind on my travel reports and on blogging in general, sorry! My internet connection is just the slowest and ficklest thing in the world - if it were a guy, we'd broken up hundreds of times by now. Thank God I'm moving apartments in two weeks and I'll be having proper wifi there! Anyway, here are some pictures of my trip to Wadi Rum a few weeks ago - we spend the entire day cruising around in a jeep (I even got to drive it for a while!) exploring the desert and enjoying the spectacular views. We slept in a camp literally in the middle of the desert, which I can definitely recommend: the atmosphere was amazing and we could see so many stars at night, hashtag romantic! I'll just let the pictures do the talking again, hope you enjoy!

Petra day 2

On our second day in Petra we kind of took it slow: We'd pretty much seen all the big sights the day before so we slept a bit longer and arrived at the Treasury around 11, ready to start hiking all the way up to the High Place of Sacrifice, from where we had an amazing view over the valley. We stayed up here for almsot two hours to have lunch (which consisted of chips, nuts, a banana and peanut butter cups - gotta get some energy!) and just relax, I'm sure you can't blame me if you see the view! In the afternoon we walked back down through the Butterfly Valley, where we saw the most amazing natural coloured rocks. The sunset on the Royal Tombs was the perfect ending to our two-day trip. Bigger is better

Since I can't get much fashion inspiration in paper form here (Vogue and co. are all crazy expensive in Jordan - I'd rather buy real clothes instead) but nothing is keeping me from reading them online, and that's how I stumbled upon this editorial from Vogue Paris, featuring oversized coats, leather and even more oversized everything. In short, everything I'm looking for this Fall, but maybe with a less hefty price tag (bye bye Celine - not that you were ever in my price range, but still).

Petra

 Last week I had a week of holiday because of the Eid festivities so I decided to go travel around Jordan with some friends for a few days. We started with visiting Karak, a city only two hours away from Amman where you can find the ruins of a crusaders' castle. The castle wasn't very impressive, but the views were! After a lot of struggling to find a bus or taxi we arrived in Petra in the evening, ready for two days of hiking. I've been to Petra 3 years ago, but it's still an amazing place to see (and I'd forgotten some of it already, shht). Safe to say my feet were dead after those two days, but it was definitely worth it!

In need of

 Going abroad with only two suitcases is hard... Especially if you don't want to wear the same things over and over again! I'm getting quite bored with my clothes already, since I've worn about every combination I could make out of 6 pairs of trousers, 10 tops and a few pairs of shoes (ok, 9 but still). Shopping isn't really great here except for Zara and the usual high street suspects (H&M, Pimkie, Bershka, Mango, Vero Moda) and Asos doesn't want to deliver to me just yet (some issue with my address...) so I'm kinda stuck! I do quite like this outfit though, it's really basic but I think the high neck top adds something special (it's one of the few new things I bought here). And yay for new photo backdrops!

Amman 10K Run

One month ago, I could barely run 4k without stopping. One year ago, I couldn't run 100 meters without being out of breath, and if you told me in high school that one day I would run 10K I would've laughed in your face, sitting in my cosy couch.

How much I'd want to spend the equivalent of a flight ticket back to Belgium (hi, boyfriend!) I think I'd rather buy one of those Chinatown bags (from which Phoebe Philo got her inspiration anyway) on ebay and a pair of scissors to make one myself. On another note, Fall has finally arrived in Amman (aka 20-25 degrees #sorrynotsorry) so I got to wear jackets and scarfs this week. Kind of obsessing about this check sweater afte I saw Danielle
rocking hers (10 times more expensive than this one, but what's a poor student gotta do...) with a leather skirt. Come on fall!

Slouching

Some more photos from my rooftop, can you blame me? The sunset is so beautiful from up here, I love going to the roof to just relax and get away from the city's buzz. I wore my favourite slouchy pants together with my new favourite top, I've been really into very simple and clean looks lately! Gotta go, I have some studying to do (mid-term exam on Thursday, eek!) and the smell of fresh pancakes is luring me to the kitchen. See you soon!

Neutrals

 Some of you asked for more daily casual outfits, so here is one that I wore a few days ago! It's still 30 degrees in Amman so jackets or layering (which  everyone in Europe is now getting excited about about) is still out of the question. Oh well, better enjoy it while I still can, eh? 
I should really change up my background, but finding a place in the streets where no one bothers me when I take pictures is almost like a mission impossible! 

Downtown

Just a few shots from Downtown Amman! I love walking around in the beating heart of the city with its busy streets and vegetable markets, despite the sometimes annoying looks I get from Jordanian guys (you get used to it...) Amman doesn't have a really historical center except for the Roman amphitheater and the citadel, but it's nice to be in the authentic part of the city ('Wasat al balad' in Arabic). I haven't been inspired much outfit-wise, but I'll try to take some outfit photos again soon! Have a great weekend!

Wide-legged

So I wanted to take your advice and look for some maxi skirts to wear here because they're breezy, but I didn't find any that suited me, as the wide kind of skirts make me look either like I gained 20kg or like a homeless person. So I've resorted to my palazzo pants I found in the Zara summer sale which also work perfectly with this weather! I took these photos on my rooftop again, as I'm not quite comfortable with having my picture taken in our street yet - we live in quite a conservative residential area of Amman so the neighbours would all be creeping on me! I did become friend with some of the kids of our street though.

Rooftop views

So how do you guys like my new background? This is the rooftop of my apartment in Amman, from which you have a great view of the city. Ok I'll stop the bragging now.
As you might know, the dress code is Jordan is a little bit different than in Belgium (or any other Western country), aka no short dresses, bare shoulders or deeply cut out tops. I wouldn't be having too much trouble with that if it weren't for the weather that is OMGSOHOT. I've never been good at coping with hot weather, let's hope temperatures will cool down soon! Unlikely though.

This is what I wore for my second day of class btw. I bought the top when I had to spend a whole day in transit at London Heathrow - yay for dutyfree Zara stores! I'm still on the lookout for those awesome Acne inspired boots though, The Zara store in Amman hasn't brought me any luck so far. Inshallah!

First days in Amman

I've arrived safely in Amman! The first few days here were a bit hectic: looking for an apartment, visiting the Institute for orientation days and placement exams (To my surprise, I'm in Level 4!), buying food at the local market and exploring the city. Everyone is really friendly here, from the people in the fruit and vegetable markets to the teachers at our Institute as well as our co-students (almost all Americans btw). We also found an apartment to live in for the next 9 months, yay! It's in a very quiet neighbourhood but close to a street full of shops and markets, and there's a falafel place very close, what more do you want, huh?

A new chapter

As you may or may not know, I got accepted at the Qasid Language Institute in Amman, Jordan to study Arabic for one semester or longer! It has all been very, VERY last minute - We only got the final response that I'd been accepted on Friday and immediately booked our flights - so I haven't had time to blog much the last week, but I hope you understand I've been really busy lately. I'm going with a very good friend of mine so I won't be all by myself, but it's still quite (ok, very) scary! I'm leaving tomorrow morning, but I'm spending almost the entire day at London Heathrow in transit (shopping tips, anyone?) so we will only arrive in Amman on Tuesday at about 4AM. I'll try to update about my adventures as well as my outfits as much as possible, but those will obviously be a bit different than usual, mainly because the dress code in the Middle East is a little bit more strict than here - anything above knee length or exposed shoulders etc. is frowned upon and also disrespectful towards the islamic culture. Before anyone starts making silly jokes, no I'm NOT going to come back as a muslima or wearing a burqa! ;)

I should really go to sleep now (my alarm is set at 5.30AM, help me) but I'll try to keep you up to date through facebook, twitter, instagram and on the blog of course! Thank you for all your support and see you in a few days!

Sunset in Tetouan

After beautiful Chefchaouen we headed to Tetouan, also known as the white city. We arrived just in time to catch the beautiful sunset from the roof of our hotel and take some obligatory sunset pictures! I also wanted to share some photos from our hiking trip to a waterfall the day before, where we could enjoy our (almost) private 'pool' - pure heaven!

So sorry for the lack of posts the past week, I've been dealing with some personal stuff that has been taking up all my free time! As you might know, I was going to be studying in Cairo, Egypt for the next five months. Unfortunately due to the recent events in Egypt going there is no longer an option. Our university does little to nothing to help us find an alternative - they suggest leaving for Egypt in October instead of September or going in the 2nd semester (both not really safe options!) - and finishing my masters degree here in Leuven really isn't an attractive option: we learn very little Arabic, as we have to translate loads of incredibly difficult texts and have to learn 5000 new words every semester but we actually speak very little Arabic in class and don't really learn how to use it in daily life - that's why we would go to the Middle East! - so I don't see the point of doing my masters degree here when I don't learn anything new or useful and would just spend another year studying my ass off for a something my heart isn't really in anymore.

So. I've been looking for other options for a few weeks now (unlike the International department of our university who was still assuming we were going to Cairo two weeks ago, despite the situation going from alarming to worse every day, and who wasn't even looking for alternatives because "it's not worth it". Damn I could write a novel about how our university organises things here. Anyway.) and the best thing I've found is an Arabic Language Institute in Amman, Jordan where we would attend Advanced Arabic & dialect classes. So unless our university comes up with an incredible offer to let us study somewhere in the Middle-East, I will most likely be studying in Jordan in two weeks! Hash tag very excited.

If all goes well (applying, writing an essay, getting recommendation letters etc.) and I get accepted, I could be leaving Belgium for more than 6 months to live and study in the Middle East! This surely will be one of the biggest adventures in my life (so far, at least) and a big change for the blog as well! I'll definitely let you know when everything is final, but in the meantime things are really excited and a bit stressful around here, so bare with me for a few more days/weeks.

Falling off

These might just be my new favourite pants, if they wouldn't just fall off my ass every 5 minutes! I was stupid enough to buy them in a UK size 10 (I'm normally a size 8) in order to wear them a bit oversized and baggy, and they didn't fall off when I tried them on in the fitting rooms (must be because I bought these two days after I'd finished my exams - the post-exam food overload was still leaving its traces - but I wore these to work last week and I had to pull them up all the time (such an attractive sight...) I didn't wear these heels to work (sports store, remember) but as I said before, I really miss wearing heels throughout the week, as well as shorts & skirts. If anyone knows of the existence of 'sporty' skirts, let me know!

Chefchaouen

After two days in Al-Hoceima we took the bus (never again...) and after a 6-hour drive through the mountains (never, EVER again) we arrived in Chefchaouen. We actually had booked a bed & breakfast here because I'd seen a lovely one on the internet (we normally just look for a place to stay upon arrival, with our travel guides marked at the 'budget accomodations page'), but it was fully booked because someone got sick (maybe they also took the bus?) so the hotel guy offered us a room in a different riad-hotel which was actually much nicer! We met two lovely British girls in our hotel, with whom we went to explore the nearby waterfalls the next day (more on that later). We wish we could have stayed longer in Chefchaouen, the beautiful blue city with its amazing relaxed atmosphere, but we were on a tight schedule! (Haha) Read on for some pictures of the lovely medina of Chefchaouen!

Day off

You have no idea how good it felt to wear shorts (and heels! I know...) after three days of long trousers and jeans, because that's the dress code at my holiday job (I work in a sports store). I'm already sweating before I've even entered the store as public transport in summer equals pure hell. I already wore these shorts and shirt together in Morocco but with different shoes, so it qualifies as a different outfit OK. Staying creative in your fashion choices is so hard in summer. Hey, I'm allowed to complain as I wasn't one of those people who wished for 30 degrees in the beginning of July. I'm already satisfied with 20 degrees and just a bit of sunshine!
PS: Excuse my tired face - I still have to get used to the work rhythm, haha. 
Also, the lighting is different in every picture due to the sun disappearing & reappearing all the time, sorry!

Melilla & Al-Hoceima

Whoops, sudden blog hiatus? I've been busy with my new holiday job every day this week so no time for blogging... Oh well, I've spoilt you while I was on holiday by preparing posts for every two days, didn't I? I'll start right away with my Morocco holiday recap, which I'll try to limit to 4 posts, haha. Well, we landed in Nador - literally nothing to see there - to head straight to Melilla, one of the two Spanish enclaves in northern Morocco. I felt immediately like I was back in Barcelona: plazas, tapas and even a Zara! We stayed in Melilla for two nights before heading back to Al-Hoceima Morocco, a beach town that could've been really pretty if it wasn't for the giant hotel that was built right on the beach, completely ruining the view. Luckily we found a more remote beach a few kilometers away (including a 25cents bus ride... gotta love Morocco), where we stayed for the entire afternoon just relaxing, swimming, sleeping and eating grilled fish. During my endless scrolling through fashion blogs and webshops - what else is there to do on a rainy day - I discovered this awesome webshop called Front Row Shop. I immediately fell in love with their clean and unsual designs that remind me of a mixture between my favourite stores: Zara, Asos and COS, but with more reasonable prices! I definitely clicked some of these in my basket (I can hear my bank account crying already...), now I just have to decide which one I will click home. I swear I'm not paid to say all this btw, I just wanted to inform you of this awesome discovery - Contrary to the dozens of Asian webshops that basically offer all the same stuff it's nice to see there are still webshops that offer different pieces without burning a hole in your bank account, right?

Hola Barcelona! (3)

On Tuesday we continued where we left off the day before and visited Casa Batlló, another splendid building designed by Antoni Gaudí. After some shopping damage (Zara is part of the Spanish heritage too, right?) and a delicious lunch at la Boqueria we were ready to explore Parc Güell, together with hoards of tourists planning on doing the same thing. We ended the day with some tapas overload, just the way I like it!

Hola Barcelona! (2)

On our third day in Barcelona we visited the masterpiece that is the Sagrada Familia. I had seen the basilica on photos before, but standing in front of it and seeing the amazing interior was just a unique experience. We continued the day in Art Nouveau-style and visited the Hospital de Sant Pau (sadly partly closed for renovation), followed by Palau Güell and Casa Milà, two other masterpieces designed by Gaudi. 
The night before (forgot to include that in my last post) we went out for dinner at Teresa Carles, a uberhip but very affordable vegetarian restaurant where I had one of the best meals in ages! Definitely recommended!

White & Blue

Sorry for the slightly overexposed photos - apparently my camera was on the wrong setting and I only noticed when I got home, d'oh! I haven't had the chance to wear my new blazer I got in the pre-sales a few weeks ago, mainly because we've been having the best weather lately! I'm not complaining, although hot weather makes it difficult to create good outfits: I don't want to wear much more than shorts and a simple top or just a dress! As a redhead, I don't handle heat and sun very well, as I instantly turn into a sweating tomato. Sexay!

Hola Barcelona! (1)

My four-day trip in Barcelona was amazing! One of the best city trips I've done so far, as Barcelona really has it all: food, views, culture, sun & shopping. Definitely a must-go if you're thinking of going away for a few days. As I said in a previous post, we left on Friday (my birthday!) by car and drove all day to arrive at Béziers in the South of France in the evening. On Saturday we only had to drive a few hours to drive before arriving in Barcelona, where we quickly headed to La Boqueria, the big market at only two steps from our hotel. After a quick lunch, we explored the Barrio Gotico, the oldest neighbourhood of Barcelona, and Plaça Reial. The next day we visited the amazing Palau de la Musica (designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of Barcelona's famous Art Nouveau architects) and relaxed at the Parc de la Ciutadella. Enough talking, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves!

Waisted

Ever since I saw this picture on Andria's instagram (loving her blog btw!), I wanted to wear my new vintage shirt tied around my waist. There's no denying that the 90's are back, and I have to admit that this is a look I've sported many times on school trips or hiking trips with my parents, tying my raincoat (oh come on, we all had one like that!) around my waist while singing 'the hills are alive' (oh yes...). I quite liked how my outfit turned out, and special thanks to my boyfriend who took these pictures for me in the gorgeous sunlight! He did take a lot of close-up photos of my legs though. Boys will be boys, eh?

Insta-Barcelona

As you're reading this, I'm getting ready to take the plane to Morocco where I will be backpacking with my boyfriend for 10 days! I'm very lucky to be able to travel so much this year (although my bank account is looking rather sad now...) but as long as I don't have a fulltime job, I try to get the maximum out of my holidays. When I get back, it's time for work again!

Roma day 3

Last day in beautiful Rome! We headed to the centre of the city by noon - we went out the night before so we slept a bit too long but hey, that's what holidays are for, right? - to see the Trevi fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Navona. It's funny how those places are crowded with tourists, and especially on the terraces of the surrounding restaurants, while just around the corner there are no tourists to be seen. Of course that's where we went, and that's where we had what can be classified as the best pizza of our life. It really helps to have a good travel guide (we used 100% Rome & Trotter guide) to spot those places that aren't discovered by the big crowd (yet). It gives me a sort of kick to find unique places where only the locals go. Does that make me a travel geek? Oh well.

Casual chic

Remember this skirt I wore when I had to play a concert back in November? I haven't really worn it much since then except for the Christmas Eve family party, but when I saw Sabina wear it in a casual way, I decided to imitate her (the sincerest form of flattery...) and wear mine with a simple top, sandals and a denim jacket. For me this is a casual outfit, although I did attract some strange looks in the streets of Leuven while wearing this. It's strange that I don't even consider myself particulary stylish compared to 'big' bloggers but for the people in my little town I am always considered overdressed and wearing "very special things". That's one of the reasons I love big cities: you see so many different people dressed in different ways, no one really looks up if you're wearing something "special" or if you're posing for outfit photos. Ah well!

Roma day 2

Another must-see in Rome is of course Vatican City and the Saint Peter's Square. We patiently waited in the line to visit the Basilica, which was well worth the waiting, so impressive! We decided to go for lunch first and then see if the line for the Vatican Musea had gotten shorter, and luckily there was almost no line when we arrived! Of course we visited the Sistine Chapel (amazing but the rest of the Musea is equally great in my opinion) and Raffael's paintings, which you'll see on the photos below. A gelato was very much needed after the musea tour, and that aperitivo didn't hurt either ;) Scroll down for more pictures!

Birthday

Today is my 21st birthday! I don't feel older than when I was 20 (maybe because when I'm writing this, I'm still 20...) and I haven't spotted any wrinkles yet, so I'm quite excited to be 21! It sounds so... grown up? Haha. The photo is from my 5th birthday btw, as you can see from my selfmade birthday crown. I was already rocking the dungaree trend back then!
I'm leaving very early today for Barcelona with my family, we're going by car as my parents have rented a villa in Catalonia where they will be relaxing after we've spent a few days in Barcelona. I'm coming home on Wednesday by plane, but I've scheduled some posts for you so you won't notice my abscence. Any last-minute recommendations for Barcelona are much appreciated! See you soon!
